Florida Caverns State Park
This state park has by far the most extensive collection of protected dry caves in Florida, and it is the only site in Florida that offers ranger-led cave tours to the public. The tour cave has dazzling formations of limestone stalactites, stalagmites, soda straws, flowstones, and draperies. Important cave fauna in the park include colonies of 2 bat species (1 endangered), as well as blind cave salamanders and crayfish in a water-filled cave.
Florida Caverns State Park has the most extensive collection of protected dry caves in Florida, and the largest one has ranger-led cave tours. Blue Hole, a second-magnitude spring, is a popular swimming area.
Blue Hole Spring, a second-magnitude, 2-vent spring, is developed as a swimming area, while a boat ramp on the Chipola River is available for fishing, canoeing, and boating. The old-growth hardwood forest in the park, has short hiking trails along the prominent limestone outcroppings at the edge of the floodplain. Florida Caverns is popular for camping, picnicking, and horseback riding, and has an equestrian camping area with stables. The park was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the late 1930s as one of the first Florida state parks and features a stone masonry visitor center set in beautiful terrain.
